The Empathetic Museum is excited to partner with Museum Workers Speak for an upcoming session at AAM's Museums & Race Gathering. The Museums & Race 2016: Gathering for Transformation and Justice will feature three facilitated sessions and a Gathering Lounge offering resources and catalysts for conversation around combating urgent problems of racism, privilege, and oppression in museum practice. The Gathering aims to provide a space for productive, strategic dialogue and reflection about race and museums.
The Empathetic Museum and Museum Workers Speak groups, led by Gretchen Jennings and Alyssa Greenberg, will facilitate Institutional Self-Reflection in Museum Practice, a workshop applying the Empathetic Museum Summary Maturity Model: A Model for Inner Transformation of Museum Structures. Participants will reflect on the model's value in addressing racial and economic justice in genuine, sustainable ways that draw on a core foundation of empathy. We challenge participants to examine their institution's capacity for empathy and begin brainstorming next steps to address issues. We also encourage participants to offer feedback on the usefulness of the Model in building empathetic institutions. Stay tuned for the outcomes of these discussions and join the conversation online: #empatheticmuseum #museumsandrace #museumworkersspeak #AAM2016
Empathetic Museum facilitators for the session are Gretchen Jennings, Stacey Mann, Janeen Bryant, Jim Cullen, Matt Kirchman, Jessica Konigsberg & Monica Montgomery. We look forward to talking.
Please note, while the facilitated sessions are currently full, interested museum professionals and students are encouraged to register for General Attendance on Eventbrite and join the conversation by attending the Gathering Lounge. Access is free and unbadged.
