Libraries and librarians are not simply nestled in their communities, they are inter-woven into the fabric of the society in which they exist.
Why do libraries and library staff connect with their communities in uniquely responsive and empathetic ways, especially compared with their museum counterparts? A new guest post on Museum Commons by Abigail Phillips and Laura-Edythe Coleman (read here) explores possible reasons why libraries are particularly well-equipped to respond to community needs effectively. The authors explain that principles of empathy and service are embedded within library philosophy and training. Furthermore, libraries and their staff see themselves as active agents in the cultural lives of their communities, and emphasize relationships and exploration over presentation of exhibits.
